Flippin' the Bird

The big summer debate in my house: Is there proper "bird" form? Does it matter which way (fingernail in or fingernail out) you flip it?

Example A (fingernail out, away from your body):

Example B (fingernail in, toward your body):

I believe it doesn't matter which way you do it - nail in or out. G is adamant that the fingernail must be facing away from the flipper and toward the flipee, otherwise you're flipping yourself off. He laughs whenever I flip the bird. (You know, because I do it so often.)

All thoughts appreciated to help settle this debate.

I think I agree with your husband. The nail indicates the front of the finger, and that's what should be facing the flippee. It's just good sense.

I totally agree with your husband! You're flipping yourself the bird, which makes me wonder...who taught you how to flip a bird, and do you still talk to this person??

Wait...what about the thumb...isn't there a thumb involved somewhere?

Nail out, sister.

(and happy birthday!)

Yep, it's nail out. The other way feels awkward to me.

Nail out. But why are those other fingers pulled all the way down? Middle's neighbors should be bent at the joint, not pulled down into a fist.

and HAPPIEST of BIRTHDAYS to you!

I would say if its facing you than it just looks like you're trying to make a point but don't realize which finger you put up at the time.

Sorry, but definitely nail out. Toward the effer you're flipping -

I would actually type effer out, but y'know, it's you're birthday. Don't want to offend. ;-)

Nail out, definitely. But it is odd, that there is a direction to the flipping, now that you mention it.

As a child I thought just to say "flipping someone off" was a bad word, so I would substitute "flicking" like an 80's version of frickin.' It's kind of embarrassing but I still make that substitution....
